Wisdom teeth and tooth removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal

One major dental milestone that happens between the age of 17 and 21 is the appearance of a third set of molars. Historically these are called wisdom teeth. When they come through correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chew better. However, there are times where they may not come through properly and will need to be treated.

Commonly if there isn’t enough room for them, they may become impacted where they are trapped in the jaw bone or gums. Wisdom teeth that aren’t in the right position can cause a multitude of problems such as pain, infections, gum disease, tooth decay, cysts, tumors, and damage to the adjacent teeth. Our dentists may recommend removal of wisdom teeth if they don’t have room to come through properly. Often, this procedure can be done in the dental chair; but sometimes may need to be referred to a specialist. Wisdom teeth that are not removed should continued to be monitored because problems may continue to develop later on.
